Custom Safari Specialists
Next Adventure is a family-owned and operated safari specialist agency based in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1996. We provide highly personalized consulting and booking services for photographic wildlife safaris to Africa and beyond for couples, families and private groups. Next Adventure is managed by a daughter/mother team with over 30 years of safari experience partnering with a hand-selected network of local operators throughout the continent.
We support well-respected providers such as Wilderness Safaris and Great Plains Conservation and work with trusted partners like African Horizons in East Africa, Zambian Ground Handlers in Zambia and Ultimate Safaris in Namibia. We also love owner-operated camps where available and pride ourselves on a family tradition of expertise, passion, and personalized service rare in the travel industry today.
There are big safari companies with good deals on packaged group trips, and, like any resort, tour or cruise, they offer photo ops and nice accommodations.
Next Adventure is different.
We work with less than 100 clients a year, nearly all of them are repeat or referrals, and every one of them receives a unique, personalized itinerary in which the nuance of each destination, the details of each transition, and the flow from start to finish are carefully considered.
For nearly 20 years, we have been taking safaris personally, and we share the benefit of our experience and the quality of our relationships with our clients. We aren’t selling seats on trips; we are introducing you to the best of wild Africa via our most trusted colleagues and friends.

How We Started
Next Adventure was founded in 1996 by the McGowans to focus exclusively on providing custom safari planning to their favorite destination, Africa! Before Next Adventure, Richard and Louise McGowan were owners of Mountain Travel for 17 years, pioneering the international travel industry and sending thousands of adventurers to every corner of the globe.
Indicative of their adventurous spirit, Louise was pregnant on their first climb of Kilimanjaro in 1979, naming their daughter Kili for this distinctive and symbolic African volcano. Kili’s childhood was spent at the feet of these two accomplished guides exploring the most beautiful and remote places on earth.
Today, Kili and Louise spend up to four months a year escorting small groups, scouting safari camps, lodges and parks and meeting local operators throughout the continent.
Next Adventure continues to provide one-on-one custom safari arrangements, and we rarely arrange activities or accommodations that we haven’t personally experienced. Contact us for assistance planning your next adventure.
Our Logo, the Oryx
The oryx is not the first animal people think of when day-dreaming of an African safari, but it embodies the character of Next Adventure and the kind of safaris we love to make.
The oryx lives in true wilderness, they are rarely sought out by the first time traveler, and you have to go out of your way to find one. However, they are distinctive, elegant, dramatic, impressive and endlessly photogenic, just like our safaris!
