CAMPS AND LODGES IN SOUTH AFRICA

We highlight some of our favorite safari camps and lodges below. While we regularly work with classic and well-known camps with proven track records, we also love smaller  owner-operated properties. Let us help you choose from the charming and distinctive properties we've hand selected.

GREATER KRUGER NATIONAL PARK - SABIE SANDS PRIVATE RESERVES

MALAMALA GAME RESERVE
Sabie Sands Private Reserve - Kruger

MalaMala, owned by the Rattray Family, is the largest private reserve in Sabie Sands adjacent to Kruger National Park comprising about 1/3 of the entire reserve. They have two camps; MalaMala Main Camp and Rattray's Camp providing a choice of cost without compromising a quality experience. They have consistently maintained very high standards winning various awards year after year. Open landrovers are used for game viewing and their guides are among the best in Africa. As with all the private lodges, your stay is on an 'all-inclusive' basis. Game drives are offered in the morning, afternoon and in the evening with a spotlight. Walking safaris are also offered. The area has some of Africa’s best game viewing, and is known for its leopard. Lion, cheetah, elephant, spotted hyena, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, impala and even white rhino are characteristic of the area. It's perfect to combine MalaMala with visits to Mount Anderson Ranch and Mashatu Game Reserves in an itinerary of 10 days.

MalaMala Main Camp

MalaMala Main Camp is set in beautiful surroundings on the banks of the Sand River. The ochre buildings with their thatched roofs, set among manicured lawns, blend harmoniously with the large shady trees. The spacious Buffalo lounge displaying bronzes, works of art and animal trophies, leads onto an expansive wooden deck which provides an elevated view of animals watering in the Sand River. Whether you prefer spending your time in camp doing some passive game viewing from the verandah or relaxing next to the sparkling pool with a drink in hand, personalized service is assured by a staff to guest ratio of three to one.

The accommodation at MalaMala Main Camp continues the African theme with spacious bungalows under thatch. In accordance with our conservation policies, we cater for no more than fifty guests at a time. The twenty five luxury rooms consist of twin or double rooms, suites, family rooms and a disabled suite.

MalaMala Rattray's Camp
Rattray’s on MalaMala represents a classical “into Africa” safari experience in keeping with MalaMala’s history of presenting an authentic view of wildlife in Africa to the discerning traveler.

Facilities within the main elegant building incorporate a viewing deck, an air-conditioned library providing a refuge for the literary devotee, an attractive bar showcasing the history of the area and an adjoining wine cellar stocked with a wide range of ’s best wines.

Breakfast and lunch are served in the air-conditioned dining room or on the adjoining deck whilst the traditional reed boma under a magnificent jackalberry tree is the ultimate outdoor evening venue.

The focus of the Rattray’s safaris will continue to reflect the ethos of the reserve over the past forty years – game viewing. Sound conservation management has ensured an environmental sanctuary for an impressive density and diversity of wildlife. Striving for a maximum of 4 guests per safari vehicle this wildlife wonderland that is MalaMala unfolds. Sightings of the Big Five and the interactions of the various species along the food chain from ants to elephants provides visitors with a glimpse of Africa as it has always been – untouched by the modern human hand.

Rattray’s accepts guests 16 years of age and older.

MalaMala's Mashatu Game Reserve
Actually located in Botswana but more easily accessed from Johannesburg

Nestled in the Tuli enclave, where South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana join, is a jewel of a game reserve owned by MalaMala. Mashatu Tented Camp accommodates just 14 guests and the Main Camp 34 guests. The reserve lies along the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers and offers an experience unchanged since the days of Kipling, Selous and Sir Thomas Baines. Access is by charter flight or road transfer.

MalaMala's Mount Anderson Ranch
Drakensburg

Located in the Drakensburg Mountains west of Kruger on the slopes of 7500' Mount Anderson. Wildlife viewing is by horseback or open land rover. The ranch also has outstanding brown and rainbow trout fishing. The ranch only caters to six guests but in total luxury. Three days at the ranch is a magnificent interlude to Lowveld gameviewing and a perfect stop between MalaMala and Mashatu Game Reserves.

SINGITA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE
Sabie Sands Private Reserve - Kruger

Perhaps the most luxurious of the Sabi Sands private reserves. Singita is beautifully situated in the woodland overlooking the Sand River. The area has some of Africa’s best game viewing, and is especially known for its leopard.

LONDOLOZI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE
Sabie Sands Private Reserve - Kruger

Londolozi is located in Sabie Sands Private Game Reserve, adjacent to Kruger National Park. On the verdant banks of rivers, its four intimate camps and one lodge have been rated as the best game experience in Southern Africa.

GREATER KRUGER NATIONAL PARK - TIMBAVATI PRIVATE RESERVE

GOMO GOMO LODGE
Timbavati Game Reserve - Kruger

Gomo Gomo is situated in the very heart of the Lowveld and allows you the freedom to plan your own activities, and unwind from the pace of day-to-day living. Gomo Gomo overlooks the Nhlaralumi River on the northern boundary of the Timbavati Game Reserve and the world-renowned Kruger National Park. Shaded by gnarled Jackalberry and Weeping Boerbean trees, the camp comprises five, fully-furnished, thatched bungalows built in traditional style. After dark, paraffin lamps create a romantic atmosphere of the Africa of old, as the night air is filled with the sounds of the wild. Gomo Gomo Game Lodge caters for two to sixteen guests. Each thatched bungalow is tastefully furnished, with single beds in all rooms except the spacious honeymoon suite with its queen-size bed. All meals are included. Drinks at the bar are separate. There are also three semi luxury East African Safari type tents with en-suite facilities.

CC AFRICA LODGES
Camps in Kruger, Phinda, Bongani, Ngala & Eastern Cape

Bongani Mountain Lodge is high on a mountaintop, within a "big five" reserve near Nelspruit in the province of Mpumalanga. Bushmen (San) and mysterious nomads once roamed these grounds. Today, Bongani is a pioneering conservation project with traditional land-owning communities.

Kwandwe,
meaning “Place of the Blue Crane”, is a malaria-free property in the Eastern Cape, boasting exceptional birdlife and diverse game. Six African-inspired suites feature private thatched decks overlooking the beautiful Fish River.

Ngala Private Game Reserve
has the privilege of being the only private reserve in the world-renowned Kruger National Park. Opulent Ngala Game Lodge pays tribute to a bygone era of elegance while Ngala Tented Safari Camp is chic and modern.

Located in Zululand, the Forest, Vlei, Mountain and Rock lodges of Phinda Private Game Reserve are well placed to experience the extraordinary diversity of a region boasting no less than seven ecosystems.

MADIKWE & TSWALU PRIVATE GAME RESERVES
Kalahari

In the vast, magnificent landscape of the Kalahari Desert is found the Tswalu Private Game Reserve. The lodge’s classic African style offers elegant and spacious accommodations. The grasslands, acacia bush and sand dunes are home to rare and striking wildlife. The desert rhino, lion, black wildebeest, giraffe, and five species of antelope roam the landscape. This spectacular area offers some of the most memorable wildlife viewing in Africa. The area is best reached by charter flights from Johannesburg. A three night minimum is recommended because of the remoteness.

NDUMO GAME RESERVE & ROCKTAIL BAY – Wilderness Safaris
Ndumo, Rocktail Bay on Indian Ocean

Two small Wilderness Safari properties located south of Kruger and near the Indian Ocean. Ndumo is on the Mozambique border in a small lush park with lots of black and white rhino. Rocktail Bay is famous for turtle watching from October to January and activities include beach walks, forest walks, bird watching, snorkeling and scuba diving. Ndumo accommodates only 8 guests and Rocktail Bay 10 guests in tree house chalets.

CAPE TOWN AREA

We recommend a minimum of three days in the Cape Town area and suggest that five nights would allow a fuller experience of this wonderful city. We use the Cellars, Mount Nelson, Cape Grace, The Commodore and several luxury bed and breakfast for most of our clients. For extended stays it's nice to spend a night in the wine country and at The Marine near Hermanus. It requires day tours to visit Cape Point and the wine country and most people want a day or two in Cape Town itself. We can arrange a rental vehicle or a minivan driver-guide for your stay in the area. Day tours may be arranged so you join a small group. We send our clients Roy Colvin's 'Western Cape - the essence' (50 pages) to help understand the area and the many activities available.

BUSHMANS KLOOF
Cederberg Mountains - Relais & Chateaux

Located at the foothills of the Cederberg Mountains only 270 km from Cape Town, amidst rivers and rock formations, Bushmans Kloof offers you a note of sophistication and comfort and a unique wilderness experience. The reserve is rich in wildlife, indigenous flora and ancient San rock art. Guests will enjoy stylish, contemporary country cuisine, enhanced by South African wines from our award-winning wine list. Activities include abseiling, fly-fishing, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, swimming, star gazing and botanical tours.

Bushmans Kloof is an ideal honeymoon destination. Ask us about special packages!

This area is particularly delightful to visit in the Spring (September - October) when spectacular wildflowers cover the arid landscape.

JOHANNESBURG

Many of our clients need an overnight in Johannesburg when transferring between the USA, Kruger, Cape Town, Victoria Falls or Botswana. For one night we usually use the airport Emperor Hotel.  For longer stays, there are a number of fine hotels like Michelangelo Hotel or guesthouses.
